Hair. Hair is everywhere! There are musicals around it. An entire industry around the maintenance of it. Products to help it grow. Products to help remove it. And now there’s a movement in Edmonton around the beauty of natural hair. CCACH was proud to share in the celebration of Natural Hair with our young people in a workshop with Osas Eweka-Smith from the Edmonton Natural Hair Show this past weekend.
During the workshop, we were given some ideas on how to style natural hair, which varied from tight braids, to Fro-hawks to lusciously loose curls. About 10 kids, ranging in age from 3 years old to 14, attended the workshop and were then able to make their own organic hair products to use on their hair and skin to make those locks that much more naturally healthy. Osas has given us permission to share her presentation in the video link below, along with the recipe for the organic hair product we made.
Parents who were unsure as to how to care for their children’s hair found the workshop was interesting and loved the delicious smelling products to add to their hair after a shampoo and conditioning. “I wanted to come to help reduce the tears after bathtime,” said one parent. Weeks ago, she had posted a photo on Facebook of her husband trying to style their daughter’s hair who was in tears. “The shea butter and coconut oil will make it that much easier for us to comb through her hair and make it healthy in Edmonton’s dry winters, for sure!”
The kids themselves had a great time making the products and learning about the variety of natural hair. They were all able to enjoy some treats and take home their new skin/hair products as a gift for a family member or friend, just in time for the holidays. We hope they all learned a little some and will continue to rock their natural hair!
CCACH would like to hold more workshops for kids over the course of the year. If you have any suggestions on what you would like to learn, please share in the comments below.
