Research Study: Clear as Mud: How Confusion About Stem Cell and Blood Donation Criteria

  • Project Title: Clear as Mud: How Confusion About Stem Cell and Blood Donation Criteria

    Hinders Racialized Youth

    Investigator:

    ● Erykah Brown, Undergraduate Student in Medical Laboratory Science

    (250)-719-8156, erykah@ualberta.ca

    Supervisors:

    ● Amanda VanSpronsen, Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry -

    Laboratory Medicine & Pathology Dept

    (780) 492-0989, anischuk@ualberta.ca

    ● Jelena Holovati, Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - Laboratory

    Medicine & Pathology Dept

    (780) 492-6604, jlecak@ualberta.ca

Background: Donation studies is an under-researched area of study in the literature and of great

interest to Canadian Blood Services. To best serve Canadians, CBS must have a comprehensive

understanding of barriers to donation so that they can pivot and pilot new approaches to progress

towards a registry that better represents Canadian diversity and meet their overall goal to

improve matching and access to stem cells for the racialized Canadian population.

Purpose: We aim to build on current research in the area of donation studies to further Canadian

Blood Services' mission to progress toward a more representative stem cell registry in order to

    better serve the Canadian public.

Objectives: To describe the extent to which racialized youth are conflating the criteria for blood

donation and stem cell donor registration and determine how this impacts their decisions to join

the stem cell registry. To make recommendations to Canadian Blood Services, based on the

findings to support their vision to truly match every need.

Study Procedure: Participants will be invited to a focus group of 3-5 participants in an online

meeting using ZOOM. The focus group will be audio-recorded and will take up to 2 hours.

Benefit: The responses provided will be used to generate follow-up studies and improve clinical

outcomes. The resulting recommendations can be used to enhance current donor recruitment

strategies so that the registry can become more equitable and representative. Participants may

gain personal satisfaction from participating in research and contributing to better recruitment

efforts for the Canadian stem cell registry to improve patient outcomes. Participants have an

opportunity to engage in a rarely discussed topic in a forum that may provide them with

increased connection to others with similar experiences.

    Information Sheet

    UofA Ethics ID: Pro00134829 2

    Version Date: Nov 23, 2023

Risk: No emotionally challenging nor sensitive topics will be discussed beyond what would be

experienced in everyday life. However, participants may experience some social discomfort

associated with small group discussions. Responses to questions are not required at the expense

of comfort, and we plan to create an open, encouraging space for sharing experiences, opinions,

and thoughts. Participants can refuse to answer any question they are not comfortable answering.

Confidentiality: Emails of participants are used only for recruitment and deleted once the gift

cards are distributed. Participants are asked to change their name to a pseudonym prior to joining

the ZOOM meeting, or before the recording starts. Participants will not be required to turn their

camera on. Audio recordings and transcripts of the focus group will be done through ZOOM,

which complies with Canadian Data Protection regulations including PIPEDA and PHIPA in

their privacy policy. Because we are using ZOOM to collect data, the data of participants will be

on ZOOM servers. The location of North American ZOOM data centers is in the United States of

America. Because your information is stored outside of Canada it may be subject to the privacy

legislation of those territories which may include access by governmental agents.

Recordings and transcripts will remain anonymized, protected, and stored on a secure server for

5 years by the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. However, it is not guaranteed

that participants will maintain confidentiality of what is discussed after the focus group. You

should not discuss the contents of the focus group or who attended.

Voluntary Participation/Withdrawal: Participation in this focus group is voluntary. If at any

point you no longer want to participate, you can withdraw and leave the zoom without

repercussions or consequences. Due to the nature of the study (focus group discussion),

withdrawal of data post-focus group will not be accommodated as that would render the data

incomprehensible. Note however that you do not need to answer any questions that you do not

    wish to answer.

Consent: Consent for being included in the study will be collected verbally at the beginning of

the focus group. Participants will be provided with a copy of the consent form to review and

    recite.

Information: If participants would like to receive the results of the study once published after

completion, they can email the investigator directly.

Honorarium: Participants will be given a $25 e-gift card. Only the research team will have

access to your email address from the Google Form. Participants withdrawing from the study

will still be eligible for the gift card.

  • Gap Year Possibilities: Discover Year is a one-year life and career skills program that helps young adults better understand what they want in life and build the skills they need to get it. Our students build stronger self-awareness, confidence, communication skills and resilience to thrive in whatever education or career path they choose to take. They achieve these results through essential skills workshops, mentorship and coaching, work terms, travel, and community service.
